Memories of the pandemic

In the spirit of archival institutions being proactive spaces for collective memory, several institutions have started to collect documents on the 2020 Covid-19 epidemics, in order to collect and preserve testimonies of the lockdown in everyday lives.

Archives Portal Europe is happy to participate in this initiative – if you want to share documents from your lockdown, post them on social media with the hashtags #memoiredeconfinement or #pandemicsmemoir and tag @archivesportal – alternatively, you can send the documents to and we will publish them for you (anonymously if you prefer so).

This is a list of APEF partners that are collecting the memory of the pandemics in their countries:




  • The Central Institute for Sound and Audiovisual Heritage, in collaboration with the Department of Cultural Heritage of the University of Padua and LYS – Locate Your Sound, is calling for home recordings of sounds from people’s windows during the quarantine:


The Netherlands

  • The Expatriate Archive Centre has launched the Expatriate Life in the Time of the COVID-19 Pandemic project, to collect the memories of the pandemic from the point of view of expatriates. As an institution that focuses on the social history of expatriation, the EAC collects and preserves material about how expatriates and repatriates are meeting the challenges they face while living abroad. If you are an expatriate or repatriate (defined as someone who lives / has lived for a temporary period abroad) and you have written about any topic related to the COVID-19 pandemic, get in touch; the archive accepts material in any language and any format, such as blogs, personal writings on paper, emails, social media posts and exchanges, photography that supplements writing.   • The State Archives in Warsaw with the Head Office of State Archives in Poland invite to participate in the project “Pandemic Archive A.D. 2020. Social collection of documents during the epidemy of Coronavirus (Sars-Cov-2)”.
    This project seeks to collect and preserve materials of various form. Participants are welcome to submit journals, diaries, artworks, poetry, stories, oral history interviews, videos or other materials documenting this unprecented time.  The idea is to create an outstanding collection of documents from “the time of pandemic” with cooperation of the whole society. Shared materials will be published on the website, where eveyone will be able to see them in their digitised form.

  • #TheIsolationJournals is an online campaign to collect journals’ pages and other items of personal memories from the pandemics
  • The Los Angeles Public Library is creating the Safer at Home Archive, inviting Angelenos to contribute materials that document life during the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Submissions will be curated and made available online
