Matera (Italy), 4 December 2019 – 1 May 2020
On 4 December 2019 the Matera National Archive inaugurated the exhibition “When Italy was not united. Stories and people from the National Archives”, organised in collaboration with 16 National Archives within the Matera European Capital of Culture 2019 event calendar.
The exhibition, who also has a multimedia side to it, wants to promote the documents – coming from the States that existed before Italy was unified – regarding cross-cutting topics that could be of interest both for archivists and historians and for a wider audience: justice administration, economics, daily life, cultural life, women life. Its goal is to show the people a side of Italy (thanks to “minor” stories told by artists contracts, maps, trial documents, miniated scrolls and convents’ menus) useful to better understand the history of the times, both at an Italian and European level.
