Time Machine 2019 Conference

The Time Machine project is hosting its annual conference at the Deutsches Hygiene-Museum in Dresden. The Time Machine aims to develop the Big Data of the Past, creating a large distributed digital information system mapping the European social, cultural and geographical evolution across times.

This large-scale digitisation and computing infrastructure will enable Europe to turn its long history, as well as its multilingualism and multiculturalism, into a living social and economic resource. Archives Portal Europe is a supporting partner of the Time Machine.

The conference programme includes distinguished speakers from Europe’s leading science, technology and cultural institutions who will discuss the potential of cultural heritage data for education, creative and media industries, entertainment, urban planning, policy-making .

Furthermore, there will be a special panel with representatives from different Directorates General of the European Commission, and a discussion to establish a European view on ICT and Cultural Heritage, elaborating on the challenges faced by Europe and its citizens, and assessing future perspectives for research and innovation, including sustainable cultural tourism and the legacy of the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018.
Panelists include:

  • Mihai Christian Brasoveanu (European Commission, Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology),
  • Anne Grady (European Commission, Directorate-General for Education and Culture),
  • Pascal Lievaux (Joint Programming Initiative on Cultural Heritage) and
  • Harry Verwayen (Europeana Foundation)
